Smartphone-Compatible Pole Ads Enhanced with XPAND Codes and QR Codes Make Their Debut!

We're thrilled to announce the launch of our pioneering service in outdoor advertising, which enhances the synergy between traditional Out-of-Home (OOH) advertising and smartphone technology to comprehensively cover targeted areas. Previously centred on billboards and digital outdoor displays, we're now broadening our offerings with our new medium: Connected Pole Ads.

Our Connected Pole Ads have been embraced by the nationwide outdoor advertising project launched this spring by "Igakuseidojo", managed by Li-fe Holdings, starting operations in Yahaba-cho, Iwate Prefecture, from the 1st of May.

Pole ads in Japan are a public service requiring official authorisation, established through collaboration between electricity and telecommunications companies and local authorities. These ads also fulfil a role as location indicators.

What sets Connected Pole Ads apart is their integration of QR code with our XPAND Code technology in the Dual Ops service, which enhances functionality and convenience without sacrificing design or space. While QR codes are apt for close-range scanning, XPAND Codes enable scanning from over 20 metres away, even on curved surfaces, thus offering an optimal user experience tailored to individual needs.

Key Features of Connected Pole Ads:

  1. They enhance user interaction through smartphones, maximising the benefits of pole ads such as precise location targeting and cost-effectiveness.

  2. Both QR and XPAND Codes can be included without compromising the layout, even within the vertical and tightly regulated space of pole ads.

  3. XPAND Codes are unaffected by curved surfaces and can be placed in sizes larger than 1 metre, enabling distant scanning by app users, while those without the app can still access the same content up close.

  4. Both types of codes include mapping features from the XPAND Code server, allowing flexible URL redirection without the need to replace the physical codes. Blockchain integration is also available through our patented technology.

  5. Embedded tracking tags in both QR and XPAND Codes facilitate the identification of traffic sources through analytics tools such as Google Analytics and Matomo.

  6. As our service is globally available, it is accessible to international tourists and users outside Japan.

  7. XPAND Codes can be adapted for areas with strict scenic regulations due to their high flexibility in colour and regulatory exemption.

  8. Installation is straightforward and cost-effective, requiring no special printing or processing – simply integrate the layout in Adobe Illustrator for pole ads, thus minimising operational costs and environmental impact.

When scanning a QR code with the standard camera on an iPhone - it can be easily scanned by getting closer.

When scanning an XPAND Code with a compatible app (XPAND Code Reader) - it can be scanned instantly from a distance.

To expand opportunities to reach their target audience of medical students, "Igakuseidojo" has installed multiple pole ads around the medical university campus in Iwate Prefecture as the first region to introduce this form of advertising. Although local regulations make it challenging to set up billboards and digital displays, pole ads have made it possible to convey messages directly to medical students.
